Despite contrary evidence, individuals with delusions can’t let go of their convictions. Delusions are often reinforced by the misinterpretation of events. Most delusions involve some level of paranoia. For example, someone might contend that the government is controlling our every move via radio waves. Causes Researchers aren’t exactly sure what causes some individuals to develop delusions. It appears a variety of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors are at play. Psychotic disorders seem to run in families, so researchers suspect there is a genetic component to delusions. Children born to a parent with schizophrenia, for example, may be at a higher risk of developing delusions. Abnormalities in the brain may also play a role. An imbalance of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) may increase the likelihood that an individual will develop delusions. Trauma and stress may also trigger delusions. Individuals who tend to be isolated appear more vulnerable to developing the delusional disorder as well. Associated Conditions Delusions are often part of psychotic disorders. They may occur along with hallucinations. Hallucinations involve perceiving something that isn’t really there, like hearing voices or feeling bugs crawling on your skin. Delusions may be symptoms of mental health problems or brain disorders. The following are some conditions that may involve delusions. Delusional Disorder. Individuals with delusional disorder experience delusions without any hallucinations. They also don’t exhibit any significant mood symptoms or markedly impaired functioning. With an estimated .2 percent of the population meeting the criteria, it’s considered a rare mental illness.Brief Psychotic Disorder. Individuals with a brief psychotic disorder experience hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized speech. Their symptoms persist for one month or less.Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia involves “positive symptoms,” such as hallucinations or delusions. It also involves “negative symptoms,” such as flat affects, reduced feelings of pleasure in everyday life, difficulty beginning and sustaining activities, and reduced speaking.Schizophreniform Disorder. Individuals with schizophreniform disorder experience similar symptoms to schizophrenia for less than six months.Schizoaffective Disorder. Schizoaffective disorder involves symptoms of schizophrenia as well a s a mood issue, like depression or mania.Delusional Symptoms in Partner of Individual With Delusional Disorder. Sometimes, people share delusions. This is most common in individuals who reside together and have little contact with the outside world.Substance/Medication-Induced Psychotic Disorder. Drug or alcohol intoxication or withdrawal may cause some individuals to experience delusions. Symptoms are usually brief and tend to resolve once the drug is cleared. Psychosis triggered by amphetamines, cocaine, or PCP may persist for weeks.Mood disorders. Sometimes, individuals with depression or bipolar disorder may experience delusions.Postpartum psychosis. Hormonal shifts after giving birth may trigger postpartum psychosis in some women. Some research indicates it is linked to bipolar disorder.Dementia. Roughly one-third of individuals with dementia experience delusions. Often, the delusions involve paranoia, such as thinking family members or caretakers are stealing from them.Parkins on’s Disease. Approximately 50 percent of individuals with Parkinson’s Disease experience hallucinations and delusions. Types of Delusions Delusions usually involve a specific theme. Erotomanic In this type of delusion, an individual believes that a person (usually of higher social standing) is in love with him or her. An example of this would be a man who believes an actress loves him and thinks she’s communicating with him via secret signal hand gestures in her TV show. Grandiose In grandiose delusions, an individual believes he or she has great talent, fame, wealth, or power despite the lack of evidence. An instance of this would be a woman who believes a god gave her the power to save the universe and every day she completes certain tasks that will help the planet continue on. Persecutory An individual with persecutory delusions believes he or she is being spied on, drugged, followed, slandered, cheated on, or somehow mistreated. For instance, a woman who believes her boss is drugging the employees by adding a substance to the water cooler has persecutory delusions. She thinks the drug makes people work harder.   Jealous An individual might believe his or her partner is unfaithful. For instance, a man believes his partner is meeting her lover every time she uses the restroom in public settingsâ€"he also thinks she is sending her lover secret messages through other people (like the cashier in a grocery store). Somatic An individual believes that he or she is experiencing physical sensations or bodily dysfunctions under the skin, or is suffering from a general medical condition or defect. For instance, a man believes there are parasites living inside his body. Mixed or Unspecified When delusions don’t fall into a single category and no single theme dominates, the delusions are considered “mixed.” If an individual’s delusions don’t fall into a specific category or the delusion type can’t be clearly determined, mental health professionals may refer to them as “unspecified.” Coping and Treatment It’s important for anyone experiencing delusions to seek professional help. Usually, the individual experiencing a delusion, however, doesn’t see her or his belief as a problem (since by definition, the person experiencing delusions believes the delusion to be fact). Usually, concerned loved ones must bring the issue to the attention of a healthcare professional. In some cases, psychiatric hospitalization is required to help a person with delusions to become stabilized. Hospital admission may be necessary if an individual becomes a danger to himself/herself or someone else. Treatment for delusions often includes a combination of medication and therapy. Medications may include: Anti-psychoticsâ€"used to block dopamine receptors in the brain (Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is believed to be involved in the development of delusions.)Atypical antipsychoticsâ€"used to block dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain (Atypical antipsychotics are often used when an individual has a delusional disorder.)Tranquilizersâ€"may be used to address anxiety, agitation, or sleep issuesAntidepressantsâ€"may be used to treat depression if someone with a delusion is experiencing a mood issue Therapy Therapy may include cognitive-behavioral therapy. It can help an individual learn to recognize and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. Family therapy is often part of treatment as well. Family members may learn how to support someone who is experiencing delusions and may learn strategies for helping individuals live their best life. Managing the environment can help someone with delusions. If someone believes the government is spying on them through the TV, it may be best for that individual to avoid watching television. Or, if someone believes he’s being followed when he goes into the community alone, it may be best to have someone go with him. There is some research that suggests certain supplements may help reduce delusions. Some studies have found omega-3 fatty acids to be helpful in reducing the symptoms of psychosis. Other studies have found B vitamins to show promise in reducing psychosis. Before starting any type of alternative treatment, speak with a physician about the potential risks, side effects, and medication interactions. A Word From Verywell Most disorders that involve delusions aren’t curable, but they are treatable. Some individuals with delusions are able to live healthy, productive lives with few symptoms. Others struggle to work, maintain healthy relationships, and undergo activities of daily living. It is best to speak with a healthcare professional about your delusions, or, if you have a loved one experiencing them, to do your best to work with a healthcare professional to provide your loved one with help.

Contradiction in The Prince - Literature Essay Samples

Throughout The Prince, Niccolà ³ Machiavelli explores human nature in the context of ruling and being ruled. In the letter to Lorenzo dà © Medici that prefaces the text, Machiavelli explains that he has greatly studied â€Å"the deeds of great men† and is well acquainted with â€Å"contemporary affairs and a continuous study of the ancient world† (Machiavelli 3). From these studies of history and the nature of both the common man and the princes, Machiavelli has concluded that the surest way to hold on to a city or territory is to raze it to the ground, and that men sooner forget the loss of their father than the loss of their patrimony. Both of these claims are concerned with the seizing of wealth and resources; however, they contradict each other in the aspect that destroying an entire city is the same as taking a person’s wealth, which is something men do not quickly forget. As a result, and although scattered and lacking resources, the refugees from the dem olished city will become bitter toward the prince and will seek revenge.In chapter seventeen, Machiavelli states â€Å"above all, a prince must abstain from the property of others; because men sooner forget the death of their father than the loss of their patrimony† (55). The reason for this is that a man whose father has been killed is less often reminded of his loss than a man whose whole fortune has been taken from him. For the impoverished man, every day he lives in poverty serves as a bitter reminder of the wrong done to him by the prince. A man who has lost all of his possessions is a dangerous adversary because he has nothing left to lose. What can be taken away from someone who has already lost everything that he has worked for his whole life. Given the context of The Prince, the people that Machiavelli is most likely talking about are the aristocracy and not the common man. These upper-class men have had their wealth and land in their family for generations. It may s eem as though Machiavelli is exaggerating the brutish and self-centered nature of man by saying that men care more about money than their own flesh and blood, but the truth is that more blame can be placed on a ruler who confiscates possessions than one who executes individuals. For this reason, the one who has lost his possessions will be more likely to seek revenge, as a greater number of problems can be pinned back to the prince who robbed him of his wealth.Similar to these ideas on the seizure of property, chapter five is concerned with the management of resources. After a city has been conquered, the best way to hold it securely is, according to Machiavelli, by devastating it. If the buildings are allowed to stand, they will serve as a constant reminder of the freedom once enjoyed by the residents of the land. The buildings become a symbol of past happiness and freedom, especially in republics. Justification for the razing of the city then, lies in the nature of the inhabitants , for â€Å"when there is a rebellion, such a city justifies itself by calling on the name of liberty and its ancient institutions, never forgotten despite the passing of time and the benefits received from the new ruler† (Machiavelli 18). Machiavelli gives the historical examples of the Spartans and the Romans. The Spartans attempted to rule Athens and Thebes through the existing oligarchic structure, yet they lost the cities in the end. The Romans, on the other hand, destroyed Capua, Carthage, and Numantia after conquering them and therefore never lost possession of them.While it is relatively obvious that these two claims are related insomuch as they both deal with how the prince should handle property, they are actually much more related than is apparent at first glance. Machiavelli argues that it is unwise for a prince to take property, yet he encourages the taking of heritage. It is indeed true that men seek greater revenge for the loss of their fortune than for the los s of those close to them, but the acceptance of this idea naturally leads to the rejection of Machiavelli’s other idea regarding the destruction of conquered cities. Machiavelli says that the standing buildings will remind the people of their former freedom, and â€Å"the memory of their ancient liberty does not and cannot let them rest† (19). If this is true, then how much more so would seeing the charred and ruined skeletons of demolished buildings incite rebellion? Each husk of a library, a legislative building, or a museum would serve as a stark reminder of the cruelty of their current leader. Therefore, one of Machiavelli’s claims must be false. Since Machiavelli’s ideas about razing conquered lands builds upon his more basic claims on the nature of man, it must be the secondary claim that is false.The majority of wealth in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was held by what today would be considered â€Å"old money,† or riches that have be en passed down from generation to generation, usually in the form of land or established businesses. For this reason, when one has his possessions and land taken from him, he not only loses his money, but also his way of life and his heritage. The countless tapestries, pieces of furniture, and estates that were held by his father and his father’s father now belong to the prince and the state. Everything that the offended man associated with his day-to-day life was stripped from him in one instant, one royal decree. His old life now gone, this man has a new goal: revenge. The same can be said about the destruction of cities. When a city is razed, the residents of the city lose everything. They lose their whole way of life and their heritage. Every memory they have will now be relegated to reminders of the lives they once had, lives that were torn asunder by the will of a tyrant. The idea that the surest way to keep something is to destroy it may be true, but only so far as one cannot truly possess something that doesn’t exist. However, news of the destruction will spread, along with sympathy for the disposed people. Nations will rise up with arms in order to stop the opposing army that is carving a burning path through the land, leaving destruction and sorrow in its wake. Machiavelli states, â€Å"in republics, there is more life, more hatred, a greater desire for revenge†¦ in their case, the surest way is to wipe them out,† as if destroying a whole republic will somehow assuage their anger (19). It is apparent then, that Machiavelli deeply contradicts himself in his advice to the prince. He urges the prince to â€Å"make himself feared in such a way, that if he is not loved, at least he escapes being hated† (54). While destroying entire cities is a good way to become feared, it leads to hatred as well. Machiavelli failed to recognize that just as taking a man’s wealth is a guaranteed way to become his enemy for the rest of his life, so is destroying an entire city an excellent way to stir up revolution among the people who used to call that city their home.

I still couldn’t get my Fahrenheit and mile sense right even after the eighth straight year here. Most of my friends from India wished me half a day before. While some took special care in wishing me at twelve by the Pacific Time Zone. The time difference is handsome. The best wish came from my mother, who could never cater to the current technologies. Action is inherent in the tasks of a social activist. Ideas alone are not enough. Though the development of philosophies and manifestos is the basis for every social movement and every stride toward social justice, without social action and the social activist, little can ever be accomplished. The great social activist must, by definition, be the great social action taker. Jane Addams was the epitome of such an action taker. Addams herself believed that ideas were not enough. She was not satisfied to live a life of ideological morality. Instead, she felt that true moral living could only be accomplished through action (â€Å"Dream† 84). His purpose was not to argue the draft itself, but to make Americans aware of the perils of going to war and the inequity in the current military. Ironically, four years later, the war is a reality, and so is the draft. First of all, the draft in the 21st century would need to be fair. Many people fear the draft because it is well known that the lower socioeconomic levels and minorities are disproportionately represented in the fighting military today. The new draft would make everyone between the ages of 20 to 26 (or perhaps as young as 18 and as old as 28) register and serve. Thus, the draft is perceived as more fair. â€Å"One reason more young people don’t serve now is the fear that while they’re wearing the uniform, their peers will be out having fun and getting a leg up in their careers. However, the idea of sending every college aged kid overseas to carry a gun is an outdated vision of the draft. Nowadays, the military needs more than just ‘professional soldiers. ’ Plenty of duties are available for those draftees (and volunteers) that are made available with the draft. As Moskos and Glastris (2001) note, we are now dealing with a â€Å"shadowy enemy† rather than an obvious platoon of marching troops. The new enemy is everywhere – terrorism. â€Å"That terrorists might poison municipal water supplies, spray anthrax from crop dusters, or suicidally infect themselves with small pox and stroll through busy city streets, is no longer considered farfetched. That we might need to draft some of our people to counter these threats—now that’s considered farfetched, to the extent that it’s considered at all† (Moskos and Glastris, 2001). Fighting this war will take more manpower than the United States currently has. This manpower will not necessarily be in trenches or tanks. They will be doing duties that many Americans do not realizes are needed. These jobs include federal armed personnel to â€Å"guard dams, nuclear power plants, sports complexes, and U. S. embassies abroad; more border patrol and customs agents to keep terrorists and their weapons from entering the country; more INS agents track down immigrants who have overstayed their visas; more coast guard personnel to inspect ships; more air marshals to ride on passenger jets; and more FBI agents to uncover terrorist cells still operating within and outside our borders†¦border guards, customs agents, anthrax inoculators, or disaster-relief specialists (Moskos and Glastris, 2001). None of these jobs require tactical war skills. In addition, many individuals do not understand the in a perfect situation, troops would not serve for such long terms. Now, with the shortage of soldiers in Iraq, many troops are being redeployed two and three times. A draft would solve this problem. In Bosnia or Kosovo, the average time of deployment was only six months (Moskos and Glastris, 2001). The short duration for draftees would be less daunting than the burden the current military is bearing. The idea of the draft of previous decades is not the same draft as the one of this era simply because the war landscape is different. Fairly distributing the burden and reducing terms is one difference that many will notice. In addition, these individuals will serve at duties not necessarily on the front lines, but in positions of homeland security due to the new type of war on terror. With the guarantee that all will serve in a way that is appropriate for them, people have a better chance of becoming that a draft is necessary to continue the freedoms that all Americans enjoy. The case study is about a nurse who is a third year undergraduate nurse on clinical placement at American University Hospital Emergency Department (ED) feels that she has been bullied by her preceptor or the instructor (Psha, 2010). Three of the incidents have been described in the case study where it becomes clear that she has been bullied but in her case the bullying did nit continue for more than three days as she has taken the issue to the Nursing Unit Manager who has asked her to complete an incident report. Different aspects of bullying have been discussed in this essay along with the rights and responsibilities of both the employer and employees in the workplace and the behaviour of the members of the organization. Discussion: Bullying in the workplace: The verbal and non-verbal abuse of the employees including physical and psychological abuses that could have severe consequences on the physical health of the victim who has been bullied is the action of bullying. If that abuse takes place in the workplace then it is considered to be bullying at workplace (Deakin, 2016). Any one particular incident could not be considered to be bullying but if that gets continued and the victim gets adversely affected by such actions then it is to be considered as bullying. The employer, seniors and even the co-workers could bully a single employee or more. The workplace bullying can take place any time with anyone and this could affect not only the employees but also the apprentices or the volunteers (Namie, Christensen, Phillips, 2014). The bullying could be done through verbal remarks addressing the victim or through physical assaults. The bullying in the case study has been done verbally by the instructor who has been observed to have made fun of the intern nurse when she has been asked the procedures of checking the areas of bleeding in case of a patient suffering from leukaemia. Again it is seen from the case study that the instructor making fun of her in front of the team leader. The intern nurse was not invited to the clinical debrief at which she felt to be ignored. Another incident when she was just treated as she knew nothing how to treat the emergency patient and she was asked to step back. That point of time also she felt as if she was not a part of the team handling the patient. All these made her feel to be bullied. According to the human rights legislations the repeated actions of bullying someone in the workplace could be harmful for the mental condition of the victim. Continuous harassments and making fun of the victim could make her/him feel mentally down and could make the victim to avoid the workplace as it is seen in the case day when the nurse on the fourth day told the unit manager that she would be coming as she felt she was being bullied (Regional Skill Training, 2016). The organization needs to have stringent rules and regulation policies to control workplace bullying and the HR needs to assume a key role in order to ensure that these incidents do not happen at workplace (Victoria State Government , 2016). If such incidents occur at the workplace then, the HR should ensure that the employees those are the victims of such workplace bul lying are dealt with empathy and then they are provided adequate opportunity to make their concerns known to the management through the HR. The HR should form a committee in order to start enquiry against such complaints those were registered by the victimized employees. The other options those are generally available to the bullied or harassed employees are that the employees those are the victims of harassment, discrimination and bullying might seek the assistance of the Workplace Contact Officers at the regional and head office levels(GOV.UK, 2016). The Workplace Contact Officers are entrusted with the duty of drawing on the existing policies and norms for the purpose of providing confidential and impartial discussion with the affected employees and guide them on the possible formal and informal options that the employees might choose to arrive at a resolution (University of York, 2016). The Employee Assistance Program or EAP is a function that is designed by the management in or der to provide resolutions to the employees those are victims of workplace misconduct. The program provides confidential counseling to the affected employees and suggests them ways of resolution. Analysis and justification of what has occurred in the scenario provided. In the given scenario a third year undergraduate nurse placed at the American University Hospital Emergency Department on a clinical placement has been the unfortunate victim of workplace bullying by her preceptor Morgan Lane. On the day when the nursing student had to accompany the proceedings in the ED owing to shortage of staffs, she was being mistreated and humiliated at the workplace by her instructor Morgan. She was made to go through all the details of the various processes like infection control, WHS, mandatory reporting and the modules on aggression management from the workplace computer. This was her work for the first shift and the preceptor was supposed to approach her for the second shift but she did not. At the time of the handover in the next morning when the team leader asked that who was working with the student for the day, then Morgan humiliatingly replied to the team leader that she was stuck with the student and laughed at her. This was an embarrassment for the s tudent who was still in the learning phase and took this very offensively. On the second day the student had to look after two patients, one was having a 11 year old girl with Leukemia and the second bed she had to attend to was occupied by a two year old boy who had croup. While attending to both of them the student was bullied and humiliated by Morgan who called her a walking textbook sarcastically when she shared her knowledge on release of thromboplastin from platelets when she was asked about where to look for the bleeding in the girl. Regarding the boy who had croup, Morgan asked her what she knew about croup but when she was about to reply Morgan stopped her and instructed her to ensure that the parents of the boy had some breakfast. This was an insulting way of behavior. On the third day while she was tending to a male pneumonia patient, then Morgan came and abused her by saying that she did a reckless job in the CPR method and said her to step aside and that Morgan and Dr. Trent Michael would do the process. She was made to stand and observe the re suscitation. This left her feeling humiliated and ignored. On the fourth day, the student refused to come to the centre and informed that to the Nursing Unit Manager that she was being bullied. The NUM instructed her to file an incident report such that they could provide resolutions through enquiry. The analysis shows bullying at workplace and the student had to file the incident report detailing all the issues clearly. This would ensure that the management takes proper steps against Morgan is there is sufficient evidence and reason found by the committee on the issue. The committee will then take action against Morgan for behaving in an unapproved manner with the third year student. The committee might take action against Morgan as this was a clear case of workplace bullying but there need to be substantial evidence for that. If the evidences are not enough to take punitive actions, then the committee might just warn Morgan and let her know that if future complaints arrive then the committee will take exemplary action against her. Conclusions and recommendations for future practice. The conclusion shows that Morgan, the preceptor was behaving in the most unethical manner with the nursing student and it was a case of workplace bullying. The recommendations can be made looking at the details of the case. It can be said that to minimize these kinds of cases, the hospitals need to have EAP as discussed where the employees as well as the intern students can raise their concerns. The Workplace Contact Officers also need to assume greater responsibilities to resolve these issues. The employees or interns those are bullied need to report the case without any fear and should clearly write up an incident report detailing every details of the behaviour of the manager or supervisor.
